Title | Our Story
Tell us how you first met? Who what when where why? Give us the dirty details.
Tyler and Lina met for the first time in March of 2013 at KU’s future graduate student visitation. At this point Lina was still trying to figure out which doctoral program she was going to choose and Tyler is convinced that he persuaded Lina to pick KU (Lina disagrees 🙂 ). They became really good friends after being paired many times for several group projects. In the beginning of grad school they were dating other people and completely by coincidence (we promise!), they broke up with their significant others on the same day. They started dating that April and the rest is history…
When did you know he / she was the one? Was there something he / she did?
Tyler: There was not a specific moment that I knew that she was the one, but I could tell from very early on that this was going to be a lasting relationship. I think it had a lot to do with our solid foundation of friendship. I always thought “5 years of dating is a requirement before getting married”. After just a little over a year of being together, I was ready to figure out how and when I would propose.
Lina: I don’t think that there was a moment that I knew he was the one, but from the very beginning I felt like he was going to be someone really special. Even when we were friends we had a really awesome connection and a great friendship, and I knew that our relationship when we started dating was just going to grow. One thing that I can think of that stood out to me was when I saw how he treated his family and friends. He would give the shirt off his back to those he loves and I think that is one thing that I love most about him.
What is the most memorable date you’ve ever had? (We promise we wrote these separately!)
Tyler: Most definitely the first time that we went to the Café Beautiful restaurant. I had never been before and Lina surprised me with this date. For those of you who do not know, it is one table in a large room and a chef individually serves a 6 course meal to the couple. It was incredibly romantic and we have gone two times since then for anniversaries!
Lina: I would have to say our 2nd anniversary. I surprised Tyler with a dinner at our (now) favorite place, Café Beautiful. At Café Beautiful you have the whole place to yourself and you are served with a multi-course meal by the most amazing chef. We had such a great time reminiscing, drinking really good wine, and eating delicious food.
Tell us about the proposal (did you see it coming, how long was it in the planning? How did you feel? Nervous, excited, freaking out?)
Tyler: As I’m sure every person who proposes does, I was freaking out! I am a Type A person to the core. So having every second of that day planned to the T was essential. The task? I was proposing at a bed and breakfast that 1) I had never seen, and 2) Lina got it for me (about a week earlier) as a surprise for my birthday. So I thought, what a perfect time to propose, it will be romantic and she could never predict that I would propose then since I wouldn’t have had enough time to plan. So I did research and looked at pictures of the room, and thought all about where I could stand, how I could distract Lina while I get the ring, and where I could set up cameras in this room I have never seen before. We were going to be going to a Sporting KC soccer game that night, so it was important that we were able to have enough time in-between getting to the bed and breakfast and going to the game. I was being incredibly weird the entire day. First off, I insisted that we be dressed very nicely for when we arrive to the bed and breakfast. She thought this was weird since we were going to be going to a game shortly after, but she thought it was my birthday weekend so she would do it! Then we are packing for the trip and I put the ring and video camera in my book bag. Lina also had items in that book bag and I asked her multiple times that she was sure nothing else needed to go into the book bag. Lina didn’t think anything of it at that time, but she later thought it was so weird how protective of that bookbag I was. On the drive there, Lina asked me if I was okay more times than I could count because of how I was acting. And then finally when we got to the bed and breakfast the owner was not there! I was terrified that my whole plan would be ruined. But sure enough someone let us in. We got into the room and I quickly scoped out where I could put the cameras and then as Lina was out of the living room I strategically placed the camera and ring under the couches. Then I asked her to wait because I wanted to show her something, she came out- and I was there on one knee asking her to marry me! She said yes 🙂
Lina: I definitely knew a proposal was coming but I had no idea it was going to happen when it did. For Tyler’s 25th birthday, I rented us a bed and breakfast for the weekend in Independence, MO to be able to relax and unwind and celebrate Tyler’s birthday. As we were driving to the bed and breakfast Tyler was acting really strange and I couldn’t figure out why. I started feeling really bad because I was worried he was not having a good time. When we got to the bed and breakfast Tyler asked me to go in to another room because he had a surprise for us, and when I came back to our room he was on one knee. For about 5 seconds I wasn’t sure what was going on and just kept saying “are you serious?” over and over again. After I realized what was going on I (of course) said “yes!”. It was perfect in every way possible. Tyler even managed to get a video of the proposal! Then after we called our family and friends and shared the news we went to a Sporting game to celebrate with Tyler’s brother and sister-in-law.
Tell us the one thing you love most about each other.
Tyler: I love that Lina is the one person that I could never get tired of. I realized this very quickly when we did a “test run” of living with each other for a month before signing a lease. It was actually the best thing that I had experienced and I couldn’t wait to spend more time with her. She is the one person that I wish to experience absolutely everything with. If I could, I would take her with me everywhere because she brings me such happiness and comfort. I don’t think there is a specific thing she says, or does… it is just a whole package that comes together to make me feel like nothing else could make me feel better in that moment.
Lina: There are so many things I love about Tyler! I can’t pick just one so will say two because I am a rebel. Tyler is so very kind, he goes out of his way to make me and everyone around him feel special. He also has an amazing sense of humor. But the best part about his sense of humor is that he is the funniest when he doesn’t try to be funny. No one has ever made me laugh as much as Tyler has!
If you feel comfortable, share with us something silly or quirky the other person does
Tyler: Lina creates new words all the time. I actually envy her creativity because she always comes up with the best words. Probably my favorite is when she says chibbies or chibs magotes (to mean it’s cold). I also love that she talks about how our cat looks like other things at specific times, such as a loaf of bread or a rotisserie chicken. Without fail when I try to make something up, mine is never funny.
Lina: If you know Tyler then you know that he loves to give way too many examples. When he is trying to explain something he will give on average 4 examples of what he is trying to explain. The best part about his examples is that they often don’t make sense since he is trying to give so many. But I really love that about him 🙂
