Photos from Natalie and Kiefer’s Kansas City Fall wedding at Fresh Air Farm and St. Gabreil’s Catholic Church by Kansas City wedding photographer Jerry Wang Photography.
Tell us how you first met? Who what when where why? Give us the dirty details.
We met our freshman year at K-State. Kiefer had transferred from another school, and two of our friends set us up on a blind date. We went out to the “nicer” restaurant in Aggieville – Hibachi Hut. It was a pretty awkward date, but somehow we made it through!
When did you know he / she was the one? Was there something he / she did?
From Natalie – Kiefer got really sick while we were in school, and lost so much blood he got hospitalized and had to have an emergency surgery. At the time, we were in a rough place, and when I saw him in the hospital bed, I just knew he was incredibly important to me and I couldn’t imagine my life without him.
From Kiefer – When I was sick, Natalie stuck around and stayed by my side. That’s when I knew I wanted to spend my life with her.
What is the most memorable date you’ve ever had?
From Natalie – When we were in college, we used to go to the Tulip Festival in Wamego, and I will never forget the first time we went! It was just a fun time and the tulips were so beautiful. We continued to go every year that we were in school.
From Kiefer – I visited Natalie in Tennessee one New Year’s Eve, and we went out with her friends for dinner and a party. It was a ‘Beauty and the Geek’ themed party, which was really fun!
Tell us about the proposal (did you see it coming, how long was it in the planning? How did you feel? Nervous, excited, freaking out?)
From Natalie – I didn’t see it coming at all. Our friend, Natasha, had told me that he was going to propose around Christmas, so it was completely off my radar (she helped him trick me). When he proposed, I couldn’t believe it – I honestly thought he was joking! I was definitely surprised.
From Kiefer – The day-of, I was very calm. I wanted to propose about three weeks earlier on our anniversary, but the ring didn’t come in in time, so I waited until my birthday weekend to surprise her. I had picked up the ring minutes before she arrived to town (I was living in Wichita), and had to hide it overnight before I proposed. I will never forget Natalie’s reaction – she stepped away from me and I had to ask her a couple times for an answer – I guess I did a good job surprising her!
Tell us the one thing you love most about each other.
From Natalie – His nerdiness/weirdness. He’s generally just an odd guy, interest-wise, but I’ve always loved that he’s passionate about his hobbies and interests even though they may not be very popular.
From Kiefer – She’s a really caring person. She wants the best for people, and is always honest.
If you feel comfortable, share with us something silly or quirky the other person does.
From Natalie – He refuses to dance most of the time, but sometimes I can get him to, and it’s the weirdest, old man moves I’ve ever seen. He breaks those moves out at the best times.
From Kiefer – The way she treats her dog – she treats him like a person. She makes him dance, and just do really funny things around the house.
Describe the theme or décor for your wedding.
We’re going for a kind of “vintage aviation” theme. Kiefer proposed at the Kansas Aviation Museum, and is a design engineer for an aviation company, so we wanted to tie in the things he loves most. We’ve also brought in a lot of DIY/personal touches that tie back to Natalie’s work as a designer and her love of books.
