Title | Our Story
Tell us how you first met? Who what when where why? Give us the dirty details.
The first time we met was at a con in Topeka called Empowercon. It was the second day of the con and there was a meet and greet for people who enjoyed DC comics. Alaina was already in the room, dressed as Black Canary, and Bryce came in with his friend Justine dressed as Wednesday and Pugsley Adams. Bryce walked up to Alaina and said “I have you on my arm.” and showed her his Black Canary Tattoo. We re-met a couple of months later at a build-day for another con and started talking from then on.
When did you know he / she was the one? Was there something he / she did?
A: I think we both felt so early on. It was just so easy to be myself completely around him, which I haven’t experienced before. I don’t know that there was any one particular moment, but several.
B: I had a feeling early on that she was the one, but what set it in stone was when my dog Tony died. I was broken because I was away in Chicago when he got super sick and didn’t make it home in time to say goodbye, but she was there to pick up my pieces. She went with me to help bury him and even helped me get an ink print of his paw.
What is the most memorable date you’ve ever had?
A: probably our first date. We were both nervous beforehand and texting each other about what we should wear, etc, which was probably a weird thing to do. It was nice to be on the same page and comforting that we could share our feelings so openly. We went bowling and then dinner even though I told him I didn’t want to go out to eat and ate before we left…He’s been just as thoughtful ever since!
B: My favorite date came after she had spent a week at her brother’s beach house and we hadn’t seen each other in what felt like forever. We went to Topcon dressed as Kirk and Spock and had a lot of fun. I even wore a toupee over my actual hair.
Tell us about the proposal (did you see it coming, how long was it in the planning? How did you feel? Nervous, excited, freaking out?)
A: Bryce proposed at Planet Comicon in Kansas City. It was during a panel Q and A so pretty public. He’s not great at surprises as he demanded I go to panel instead of showing my friends who just arrived around the con. So I was then pretty nervous.
B: I had arranged with our friend Ande Parks to propose during his Q and A Panel with other comic books artists at Planet Comicon. I told a lot of our closest friends hoping that they would show up, but only her best friend and her partner showed up. She told me early in the day she wanted to go off with them and let me go to the panel alone, so I was really worried I did all the work for nothing. But she went with a little bit of coaxing.
Tell us the one thing you love most about each other.
A: his childlike humor and Silliness.
B: the thing that I love most about her is that she puts up with my crap, but also helps me realize when its too much.
If you feel comfortable, share with us something silly or quirky the other person does-
A: Bryce lives like he is in a musical, making random (terrible) songs for everything.
B: Alaina likes to pretend she doesn’t like my songs.
Describe the theme or décor for your wedding.
We are having a romantical-nerd wedding. We’ve made the centerpieces ourselves and these reflect a comic couple we love, Black Canary and Green Arrow. We are using comic covers as table markers. Our cake will also be comic inspired. We also have elements of our love of dogs (our wedding tumblers and wedding reading).
