Title | Our Story
Tell us how you first met? Who what when where why? Give us the dirty details.
- Erin: We met freshman year of high school (2005). We were close friends for years, neither one of us knowing the other had a secret crush, until sophomore year of college (2011). I was house-sitting for a friend and we had made plans with another friend to have a movie night just the three of us. The other friend cancelled so it was just the two of us and he finally got the nerve to kiss me. We’ve been together ever since.
When did you know he / she was the one? Was there something he / she did?
- Erin: I was visiting him in Manhattan and we were hanging out watching TV and we both made the same really stupid joke at the same time. It was so awful, and I don’t know why it was so funny to me but I love that we both have the same terrible sense of humor.
- Jacob: It is hard to know exactly when you knew. I think for me it was a realization over our relationship that I am at my happiest when I am with Erin.
What is the most memorable date you’ve ever had?
- Jacob: When I lived in Manhattan while Erin was in KC we would meet halfway at Schlotzsky’s in Topeka. Those were always my favorite dates.
Tell us about the proposal (did you see it coming, how long was it in the planning? How did you feel? Nervous, excited, freaking out?)
- Erin says: It was the last day of school and I had gone to the 5th grade send off for the students I had student taught. When I returned, Jacob met me at the top of the stairs and told me he had brought home Winstead’s for lunch. (Winsteads is special to us because it was our favorite hangout spot in high school, and before that night Jacob finally kissed me when I was housesitting, he had invited me to go out to Winsteads. I thought he was just wanting to hang out and I wasn’t hungry, so I said no. Turns out he was asking me out and I had just unknowingly turned him down…) I walked in and he had 2 dozen red roses waiting for me. I still wasn’t sure he was proposing because I figured the flowers were on sale; he does stuff like that pretty often, so I started eating my onion rings and he told me to wait. That’s when he got down on one knee.
- Jacob: The flowers were on sale.
Tell us the one thing you love most about each other.
- Erin: Jacob is always making sure everyone feels included. He makes sure everyone else is happy before he thinks about what he wants. He is the kindest and most considerate man I’ve ever met, and he has my sense of humor. He gets me.
- Jacob: Erin is always extremely caring, even for complete strangers or at times when it would be difficult for most to care. It seems almost everytime we go anywhere there will be a child, elderly person or just a random person who needs help and Erin will stop what she is doing and go out of her way to help that complete stranger. Even if she has had an awful day she always makes an effort to be a good person
