Title | Our Story
Tell us how you first met? Who what when where why? Give us the dirty details.
Hunter and I met in German Class at KU in the fall of 2009. We spent many hours between classes at Potter’s Lake listening to music, eating lunch and getting to know each other. We both studied abroad in Germany together in the spring of 2010 and that’s where our relationship really began, as we were lucky enough to spend a semester traveling Europe together! The rest is sort of history as they say… We spent the next 7 years hopping around between the USA and Germany and traveling everywhere we could in between. I think for both of us, that’s our favorite part about the other. If you can travel together, you can do anything!
When did you know he / she was the one? Was there something he / she did?
“I knew Hunter was “the one” when we were stranded at the airport in Morocco being told that the next flight out was in one month. We had a very trying experience in a frustrated crowd of people whose culture was very different from our own. He stuck up for me while other men were laughing at us because I was standing in line with all the men- not waiting on the side with the women. Hunter was quick to tell them off and I gained a tremendous respect for him in that moment. He remained calm and stood his ground with me by his side. We also got out of there the next day!”
“I knew Katie was the one when she had plans to move to Germany to finish her German Minor; a plan I had as well but wasn’t a possibility until I met her. Her love for traveling and experiencing other cultures is what I find most fascinating. A month or two after we met, she had already been accepted to study abroad. I knew there was a special connection between us and I couldn’t imagine her being gone for eight months. I applied to the same school about a month after the closing date of acceptance. I had spent weeks talking to the study abroad department almost every day, and almost every day they declined to accept me. However, after much persistence and determination, they finally accepted me and our story began.”
What is the most memorable date you’ve ever had?
Our most memorable date was probably our first date…
Others include Hunter’s birthday in Prague, and Oktoberfest in Munich!
Tell us about the proposal (did you see it coming, how long was it in the planning? How did you feel? Nervous, excited, freaking out?)
Hunter proposed to me over Easter weekend while we were back in Kansas to visit my family. It was completely unexpected and everyone was in on it except for me! He said that he wanted to walk campus because he hadn’t been back in years, so we did. When we reached Potter’s Lake, he started reminiscing about the times we first started to get to know one another, and then he dropped down on one knee and asked me to be his wife. It completely surprised me! He brought me back to where it all began for the most thoughtful proposal on a perfect spring day.
Tell us the one thing you love most about each other.
“What I love most about Hunter is his patience. While I tend to be a little high-strung at times, he always grounds me. In my opinion, we perfectly complement each other.”
“What I love most about Katie is her genuine care and forgiveness. With all my mistakes, blunders and misunderstandings over the past seven years together, Katie has definitely forgiven me more than enough. This only proves her respect and loyalty to our relationship and sincere care about us growing as a couple.”
